The number of homeless in the United States has reached astounding levels. Millions of Americans will go to bed tonight in places strange to them, a place they cannot call home. State and local governments throughout the nation are struggling to deal with the homeless crisis that is gripping their communities. The homeless are not only downtrodden individuals or able-bodied adults, they are often families with children of all ages.
It is estimated that one in every thirty children are homeless in the United States. These children do not know what it is like to have a place to call home, no sense of permanency in their lives. As their parents struggle to find a steady, livable wage, the children are forced into shelters, family cars, or any form of lodging their parents can obtain.
New York City is reporting record numbers of families residing in shelters this year. Communities, urban and rural, throughout the country are reporting similar occurrences. The unstable economy in many regions and difficulty obtaining a living wage is forcing more and more families out of safe and secure housing into the burgeoning confines of community shelters.
Even though the shelters appear suitable, there are countless stories of assaults, fights, outbreaks of disease and other issues that no parent should have to worry about when raising a child. A visit to shelter should be temporary, but the reality is that the visit is often only broken up by a brief respite in cheap motels that bring financial burden most homeless families cannot sustain.
